About Us

Diagnostic Radiologists, Pretoria East Hospital
Eastrad is a modern diagnostic radiology practice situated at the Netcare Pretoria East hospital. We are a well established radiology practice with more than 25 years of experience. Our passionate team of specialist radiologists and radiographers are dedicated to providing professional diagnostic imaging services, of the highest standards, to our patients. Furthermore, we work in association with COMIT Nuclear medicine (Nuclear physicians) for the interpretation of PET-CT.
Our practice is a proud member of the Radiological Society of South Africa (RSSA) and our radiologists are members of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) and Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

What We Do

X-rays

Images are acquired by the use of low dose electromagnetic radiation (x-rays). X-rays pass through the human body and are used to create radiographic images which can be displayed  digitally and interpreted by a radiologist (e.g bones, lungs, etc).

Fluoroscopy

Images are acquired using “real-time” x-rays to evaluate the passage of radiographically dense contrast material (e.g. barium sulphate) through body structures, such as the stomach and intestines, etc.  It may also be utilized for x-ray “guidance” during procedures, such as lumbar punctures, to ensure precision.

Mammography

Uses low dose x-rays to detect abnormal breast tissue, including breast cancer. X-ray images are taken from top-to-bottom and angled from side-to-side while the breast is compressed between a clear plastic paddle and the detector.

Ultrasound

High frequency sound waves are used to create images (without radiation) and are useful to evaluate the abdomen, pelvis, musculoskeletal system, heart and various other anatomical structures. Please note for an abdominal ultrasound you should be fasting and have a full bladder.

CT scan (computed tomography)

Uses a series of multiple computerized x-ray images taken from different angles around the body to produce detailed cross-sectional  imaging (slices) of anatomical regions such as the brain, chest and abdomen, offering more diagnostic information than normal x-rays.

Bone densitometry (DEXA)

Special type of x rays used to determine the density of bones and therefore detect osteoporosis (fragile bones at risk of fracture).

PET- CT Scans

A PET-CT Scan is the combination of images from a positron emission tomography (PET) scan and a computed tomography (CT) scan. During the scan, safe radioactive material is injected to detect abnormal tissues / metabolism in anatomical structures, useful in e.g. the detection of cancer and evaluating the body’s response to certain treatments.

MRI

A strong magnetic field (without radiation) is used to produce highly detailed images of anatomical regions such as the brain, spine and musculoskeletal system.
